Covid 19 laser cut face shield

I have a 2D design version but am updating it for optimal cutting

No - thatā€™s what Iā€™m usingā€¦ I have created a few files in 2d design that are optimised. Due to how id already prepped my material for school projects, I have done a couple of files.

See link below for all my files.

Iā€™ve also now made some custom pin beds (lasered from 3mm acrylic) which are in the files as i had problems with burning underneath and a very dirty honeycomb. I I did try cleaning but no major joy.

With my settings - Iā€™m managing to make about 30 an hour.

Thanks for the reply and link to files . I have version 1.60 V2 of 2D Design , but will try and work around it.

Does anyone have files for the older version?

If you have a valid school licence for 2d design you can now download V3 and use it at home during corona lockdown. https://www.techsoft.co.uk/adverts/coronavirus-covid-19

I will save the files I have as .dtd files, check the link again in 5 mins

All done

Looks like between us weā€™ve used up Kitronkā€™s stock of 0.5mm PP!

These guys appear to have some but its more expensive:
https://www.technologysupplies.co.uk/polypropylene-sheet-translucent-white-1210-x-810-x-0-5mm.html
(Update: only 1 sheet in stock!)

Has anyone tried thicker PP - it seems to be more readily available in 1mm, e.g:
https://www.directplastics.co.uk/polypropylene-sheet

Similarly, has anyone tried other materials, e.g. PE? the interweb seems divided on whether PE is OK to laser cut.

Iā€™ve look at all the suppliers on the first few pages of a google search and no luck. Any other sources of 0.5 PP?

Kitronik are getting deliveries every couple of days and taking back orders so ring them and ask.

We will also try to use the hashtag. We are up in Cumbria and have turned out 250 shields in the last two days using the design on here. I hope more schools get involved.

judging by the shortage of pp, plenty are!

Look North has has lots of reports of schools doing it.

Iā€™ve got a FAQ asked of me

ā€œDoes it matter that the top is open?ā€

Early on we were told that a closed top was important, but not seen that stressed since. Any feedback from medics on this?

Hi Dermot,
I have literally only just found this site and think what you are all producing is amazing. Have not read all the streams, but in answer to your question, yes, please keep the top closed.
I am a frontline worker in ENT at the QE in Birmingham.
I have just finished a night shift and was discussing with one of my junior colleagues how I think each of us on the ENT team should have our own shield so that it is hygienic and does not pass on CV19 between practitioners (currently there are not enough visors , so we have 2 for our team that get cleaned in between use - but if a user unwittingly has CV19, then it could reside in the foam parts of a shield and be passed onto the next user despite cleaning. Hence my suggestion to each have our own visor).
Is there any way at all I could get hold of about 16 visors?
ENT forms one of two most at risk specialties of medics (from the Wuhan evidence) - this is scary for us on the frontline, and I would appreciate anyone able to supply us with 16 (or a few more) visors asap.
I work at the QE and live in Gloucester, so if possible could receive in either place.
many thanks!!

PS - re the top being open - the more closed off the visor can be the better, but even an open one that is attached to the foam bit so that it sits well on front of forehead is way better than nothing.
Thank you again to all you amazing people who can make these things, I am so impressed at what is going on.

Hello Dermot

You can modify the design as you like. The reason this design does not have an open top is as follows:

  1. Originally the Nottingham City GP Alliance, who came to me to ask for shields, requested 3D printed version of the PRUSA RC3 shield which has an open top. As the 3D printed design takes 1.5 hours or more for a single unit, Kitronik and I decided to work on laser cut version. The first version we worked on was the Fast Face Shield, which indeed has a closed top.
  2. We were unable to source the materials needed for the Fast Face Shield (it uses an all laser cut design from a single material). So we produced a laser cut version of the PRUSA RC3 but we included a closed top.
  3. The feedback was got from the GP Alliance was that they didnā€™t want the laser version, they wanted the 3D version or something exactly the same as itā€¦ which meant an open top. Weā€™ve had now hundreds of these into the GP alliance and the Hospitals and we get mixed feedback about the top. The advice weā€™ve been given includes medics wearing a scrub cap to close the top if they need to, the addition of an extra piece above the shield if needed OR we can work in a closed top.
  4. However, at this point our formal points of contact have given us ZERO feedback. We do get individuals pop up and say ā€œclosed top is essentialā€ and ā€œIā€™m a doctor you must close the topā€ but the people weā€™ve been supplying the face shields to say nothing. Weā€™re not opposed to changing the design and adding a top in, but we need it to come from the people weā€™re supplying too as itā€™s impossible to determine the signal from the noise.

If you feel a top is important you should add it to the ones you make, especially if thatā€™s the feedback you are getting. Iā€™m not in a position really to change it.

@NHSdoctors957 mentions ā€œfoamā€ as she says, there havenā€™t read the thread or I assume the FAQ. Our design here doesnā€™t have any foam. The original official NHS shield DOES have foam, making it impossible to sterilise.

The laser cut face shield is intended to supplement, not replace other PPE and official equipment. Where the risks are greatest and the medic needs complete protection, they can do a number of things. Ad-hoc a solution for the top, add in another bit of material as a top using a hole punch.

Weā€™re working on the inclusion of a heighten top but as mentioned, weā€™ve had NO OFFICIAL FEEDBACK from our receivers, which for us is crucial.

this design has no foam. Please could you email me info@smokeandmirrors.store

I wonder if this may helpā€¦
Many schools use 2D Design to link with their Laser cutters so Iā€™ve produced drawings in this format (.dtd) I hope these files may help those who canā€™t use the DXF files. Let me know if there are other formats needed and Iā€™ll happily try to convert. Iā€™m not sure how to upload the .dtd files could you advise on how I do that please?

Also I found that tessellating each component made both the cutting and use of material more efficient (see above pic).

Finally, Iā€™ve been using the covers from ring binders (0.7mm) for the head strap and forehead strap, that may help with the shortage of materials.
Hope this helps,
Peter

I am working on something that can be added easily into the existing complete laser cut shield as additional top protection.

Good shout smokey.
Some thoughts:
The current design can be easily sterilised for re-use. I am planning on using meths to sterilise before packaging.
Addition of a foam part means that alcohol based sterilisation is effectively out of the window.
Could draught excluder strip be worked into this?
(I have not built one yet, so donā€™t know the size of the gap between the headband and the spacer)
The draught excluder part could be dispoable, its about 50p a metre: https://www.screwfix.com/p/diall-sealing-strip-white-24m/295fr

I shall await the superior knowledge of Smokey and others!

Updated files for 1100x650mm sheet in my dropbox folder: https://bit.ly/2JzZnKV

Itā€™s super comfy on the head already!

I can put them into my dropbox folder, or you could create your own dropbox account and share the folder.

Does your school use onedrive? If they allow sharing of folders externally to the school you could do that. (ours is too locked down for me to do that)

If you are stuck you can either email them to me or I could give you write access to the dropbox folder so you can upload.
Not sure what the etiquette is about email addresses on here. I assume Smokey is the Admin?
Smokey, you could release my email to psteele.

oooooohhhhhā€¦ share, share, share you clever, clever boy!
